Route description
Ausserberg - Start of the Niwärch aqueduct P. 1264
From Ausserberg (1008 m), follow the tarmac road for "Niwärch".
Along the Niwärch aqueduct to the Baltschieder via ferrata
Follow the road a short way, then turn left (signpost). Through the tunnel (headlamp!) Into Baltschiedertal. The the source of the Niwärch is reached by the huts of Ze Steinu (1296 m) in the bottom of the valley. Behind the huts, on the left, you will soon see the mighty stream that descends directly from Wiwannihütte. The ferrata runs over the ridge to the right. Blue markings lead from the valley path (info board) over meadows and scree to the mouth of the gorge. The start of the ferrata is on the right (large red spot, ca.1780 m).
Variant Niwärch aqueduct
An airy variant is the path along the "Niwärch" aqueduct: this narrow path traverses through the cliffs with an abrupt drop on the right, on the western side of the outer Baltschiedertal; some passages are equipped with cables, and if you are planning on doing the Baltschieder ferrata, the exposure should not be a problem!
