A rather arduous hut approach, which is best made when the snow has melted up to approx. 1500 m (very specific circumstances). The gullies on the way to the Underi Trift can be filled with avalanche snow and ice long into spring. Crampons and ice axe are therefore required. The Triftbahn from Schwendi to Underi Trift is not in operation in winter.
Route description
Furen - Schulter P. 1460 m
From the bus stop at Fuhren (1149 m) in the Gadmen valley, cross the bridge (1130 m) over the Gadmerwasser (river) and turn right. Roughly 300 m down valley make a left and follow the line of a steep, alpine path south-east in the direction of the Schaftellouwi stream. Ascend next to the stream until Pt 1375 (footpath junction), then bear right (SW) passing Obri Schaftellouwi on route to a forested shoulder (approx. 1460 m).
Shoulder P. 1460 m - Windegghütte SAC
Continue over the shoulder and start descending, at first very exposed, towards the Triftwasser gorge. The line of the path then contours with small ups and downs along the slop, past Im indren Hori (1331 m) and across the Beese Graben to gain Sunnige Trift, the mountain station of the Triftbahn (1357 m). Continue south and cross the river to Schattige Trift (the shady side). Diagonally ascend the slope in line with the summer path to a final, steep (up to 38°), avalanche-prone northern slope, which leads up to the hut.
