The Wildhorn is the highest and probably the most visited peak at the western end of the Bernese Alps. This route, the most popular to the Wildhorn both in summer and in winter, provides a scenic, easy and not too long high tour starting from the Wildhornhütte. The delightful way involves the crossing of two separate glaciers, which although they present one or two crevasses are otherwise rather flat and straightforward. The Schnidejoch, which revealed artefacts of prehistoric man during the hot summer of 2003, can be reached with a small detour in a matter of a minutes.
Route description
Wildhornhütte SAC - Chilchligletscher
From the Wildhornhütte (2303 m), follow the marked mountain path in the direction of the Schnidejoch first over the moraine and later pass below the rocky peak of Chilchli (2785 m). Just west of P. 2676 you leave the path to the right and join the Chilchligletscher at its lowest point.
Chilchligletscher - Glacier du Téné - Wildhorn Summit
Ascend in a south-westerly direction towards the left side (looking up) of the Chlichligletscher, later in the season with less snow better on the right (western) side of a rock feature in the glacier. Then climb a steep rocky slope to a small pass P. 2914th. Continue south through rocky terrain to meet the Glacier de Téné. Follow the natural rise of the glacier, tracing a wide arc beneath a distinctive rock spur to reach the final steepening which gains you the fore-summit (3248 m). The 'main' summit with the cross, which is actually two meters lower (3246 m), can be reached via the simple connecting ridge to the northeast.
