High above the Walensee

Wageten is the western outcrop of Brügglergrat, which leads towards Glarnerland. It is accessible from all sides. Besides the access from Schwändital via Lochegg there is an interesting alternative from Niederurner Tal, which can be reached by an original aerial cableway. The view from Wageten down to Walensee and to Glarner Alpen is breath-taking. The whole package of landscape, view and enjoyable scrambling on the last stretch make the tour to Wageten a unique adventure off the beaten paths.

Route description

Morgenholz - Wänifurggel - beginning of the summit ascent

From the Morgenholz summit station of the aerial cableway follow the alp access road to Niederurner Tal past the Hirzli restaurant. At Mettmen (P. 1168) a mountain hiking trail branches off southward and zigzags up to Wänisattel (T3). From Wänisattel follow the faint path south of the summit ridge eastward to reach the beginning of the summit ascent marked by a blue arrow.

Wageten summit ascent

Through a short, steep couloir you reach the fissured limestone ridge, which you follow eastward to reach the summit (T4+). The descent to the foot of the ridge is on the ascent.

Beginning summit ascent - Lochegg - Niederurnen/Oberurnen railway station

Continue eastward to a wide ridge leading down to Mittlere Lochegg. From there hike on hiking trails down the Oberurner valley to reach the farmhouse at Bränden. Now descend along the forested ridge to a forest trail, which leads directly down to Niederurnen via Siten. To reach the railway station Niederurnen/Oberurnen bypass the industrial area on the hiking trail southward or along the football field northward. You can also return to the bottom station of the aerial cableway.

Wageten - Untere Lochegg – Niederurnen railway station: 3½ h

Difficulty / Material: The most adventurous part is the last stretch to the summit. Initially you need to scramble up a grassy couloir, then you balance on the ridge like a tightrope walker to reach the summit. It is recommended to use a rope to secure children and inexperienced hikers to allow them an enjoyable adventure free of fear. The rock is of good, solid quality.
