An exciting ski tour (using public transport) high above Sargans, where the descent is longer than the ascent (if there is enough snow in the Rhine valley).
Route description
Kurhaus Alvier – Tschugga
From the end of the aerial cableway at Kurhaus Alvier located at Malanser Holz (976 m), ascend westward on the summer trail via Bejadim (1119 m) and traverse the forest to reach Schnapsgrotzen (1220 m). Continue to ascend westward until you meet the road at P. 1439. In the same direction pass Skihuus Gauschla and ascend several clearings southward to reach Labria (1624 m) and Chamm at P. 1711. Now follow the ridge southward to Tschugga.
Descent
Skiing down on roads and forest trails via Skihuus Gauschla and back to Kurhaus Alvier is not very interesting. Instead follow the ridge to P. 1764, then ski eastward across the ridge at P. 1478 (Berghaus Gonzen, closed in winter). Now ski down Walserberg to Lanaberg (1075 m; ski hut). Then, on the summer trail ski steeply down south-eastward to reach the bridge across the Luterbach and continue on the slopes of Maienberg to Matug (731 m). Then, for a short stretch follow the road northward, then ski down via Zagg to P. 548 and in pastures to Trübbach or Azmoos.
