Rewarding hiking mountains overshadowed by Pilatus

From Rägeflüeli and Studberg you overlook the entire Eigental and have a view far into the Mittelland and up to Pilatus. In 1453 Lucerne acquired Eigental, particularly for its timber. From 1870 on the growing city has used the valley’s water, later it was a drill ground for troops and subsequently the city’s school organised summer camps in the valley. After the Second World War the Swiss army occupied the area around Blattenloch, Trochematt and Pfifferswald as a shooting range. It is still used for shooting, when and where exactly is published at www.vtg.admin.ch; you may also call 041 319 32 32.

Route description

Eigenthal – Schofberg crest after P. 1399

From the bus end station Eigenthal Talboden go to the Rümlig and cross the creek on the bridge at P. 983. Now zigzag south-westward up Ganterseiwald to reach the chalet at Rosebode. From the nearby cross follow the unmarked faint path on a ridge to the crest at P. 1361. Continue on the crest following a distinct path past P. 1406 and P. 1399 until you reach an impressive rock wall above Schofberg.

At the foot of the rock wall on the crest above Schofberg the faint path disappears. Slightly ascending keep west on the shady side of Rägeflüeli. A 50 metres wide ledge, fairly steep, leads out on a first clearing. Now go straight on until the faint path through the adjacent forest leads you to a second clearing. Here you find a more distinct path zigzagging up a steep grassy gully which leads you to a breach roughly 70 m east of the summit and subsequently to the Rägeflüeli summit (1582 m).

Rägeflüeli - Studberg

Follow a marked hiking trail on the ridge to the saddle at P. 1523 and hike briefly up to the bench on the summit of Studberg.

Studberg - Ochs - Hinder Mülimoos

Continue on the ridge, descend briefly on a wooden stair to P. 1507, then ascend to Ochs and to the bifurcation before Hüenerhubel. Here hike down right to Gummli and ascend north-east until ca. 1430 m, where the faint path separates. Straight up it leads to P. 1487 (equipped with chains) and through an often-wet pasture to Hinder Mülimoos.

Hinder Mülimoos - Eigenthal

Follow the small road to Vorder Mülimoos and continue north-east keeping the height. At a signpost hike down the valley through the forest, which was heavily damaged by a storm. On a wider, fairly overgrown trail hike through the mossy Gällemösliwald and across many small bridges to Vorder Gällemösli. At P. 1019 you can branch off right to traverse north on faint paths down to a pasture. Then follow the hiking trail to the Rümlig, turn right, and across the creek you reach the starting point.

Time: Eigenthal – Studberg 2 h 15 min.

Studberg – Eigenthal 2 h 30 min.

Difficulty / Material: The stretch from P. 1399 to Rägeflüeli is challenging. Often the faint path on the shady side of Rägeflüeli is hardly visible in the grass. Use your instinct. Small landslides force you to hike up and down at the foot of the rock wall. The grassy gully up to the Rägeflüeli summit is steep, somewhat slippery, but not exposed.
