If the avalanche situation is critical, Winterhorn and Stotzigen Firsten are the classic tours in the Gotthard area. The north-east-facing slopes very often have good snow conditions. This and the fact that the starting point is easily accessible by public transportation make it a very popular tour.
Route description
Realp – Stotzigen Firsten ski summit
From the Realp railway station (1538 m) go south-westward to the overpass and follow the tracks of the old Furka railway to the bridges across Furkareuss (1603 m). Follow the road southward until a hairpin bend, where you leave it south-westward to reach Laub (1729 m). Making an arc westward, ascend a short escarpment (34° on 60 metres of vertical height) to Mäder and continue on the moderately steep north-east shoulder to reach the little lake at 2366 m. Passing P. 2542 of Lägeten Firsten on the south or the north, ascend the east slope to the cairn on the eastern summit (2747 m).
Variant: From P. 2747 to the north summit (2752 m).
For the passage westwards over the ridge to the somewhat higher northern summit (2752 m), a slight scramble is called for.
Descent
On the ascent; again, you can pass Lägeten Firsten on the north or the south.
