Since the skiing terrain is ideal and the 360° view marvellous, Stockberg is popular. Starting from Stein, there are two possible ascents. Both of them offer interesting descents. The traverse Schwägalppasstrasse - Toggenburg via Risipass, popular among snowshoe hikers, is too flat for skiers.

Route description
Stein - SW ridge - Stockberg
From the bus station Stein SG, Dorf (838 m) go northward via Steiner Berg to reach P. 1008. Now for a short stretch follow the road to reach Hinterberg. Continue via Oberstofel, Josenhüttli and Stockneregg on the ridge until the summit of Stockberg.
Variant: across Risipass
The wide terrain permits many other ascents. One of them is from the eastern side of the village of Stein to Hag and via Rueboden and Ahorn to Risipass. From here traverse toward the Stockberg alp and on one of the forest trails of the steep south face you reach the summit.
