Route description
Schwarzsee - Zmuttgletscher - Schönbielhütte
Take the cable car to the Schwarzsee station at the base of the Matterhorn's famous Hornli ridge. Follow the line of the summer footpath NE down to Restaurant Stafelalp at 2198 m on the valley floor. Then head west past Zermatt's main water supply (several small reservoirs) and onto the all but annihilated, rubble-strewn Zmuttgletscher. Continue up the centre of the broad valley, staying clear of the steep banks on either side, until the opening of the Schönbiel glacier to the north presents itself. Steer N into the valley and continue towards P. 2721 before cutting back SE onto the ledge and following this round to the hut.
Variant via the N lateral moraine
If there is enough snow, head past the pumping station (2179 m) and up onto the Zmutt Glacier's north lateral moraine. Follow roughly the line of the summer path westwards along this until P. 2576, where you can climb shortly up to the hut. (More exposed to avalanche danger: south facing slopes! Only with safe conditions / early in the day).
