Two sentinels guard the city of Lugano and its bay: to the east is the villa-covered Monte Brè; to the south the pointy San Salvatore. At its foot is the suburb of Paradiso. Since September 2002, a very sporty via ferrata has lead through the north wall of San Salvatore. It was first thought up by the Lugano mountain guide Delio Ossola, who was killed on the Matterhorn, and later built in his honour. At the top of San Salvatore is a chapel with a broad terrace. The 360-degree view here is one of the best in Ticino, if not Switzerland, and alternates between the panoramic views of Mount Rosa and the long crystal blue of Lake Lugano. The owner of the summit, the chapel and the hospice is the "Arciconfraternita della buona morte e orazione" or "The Brotherhood of good death and prayer". The first summit chapel was built in the 13th century; and was mainly visited by pilgrims. The people of ETH Zurich, who promoted lightning research on the summit from 1943 to 1982, had some first hand experiences; in other words, if a thunderstorm seems to be brewing, it is advised to leave the viewing platform (not to mention the via ferrata).
