Säntis 2502 m Ski tour
Säntis, called the «King of Eastern Switzerland», is not really a mountain to climb by skis. There is an aerial cableway from Schwägalp. The mountain top is full of tourism ballyhoo, but the view is one of the best in the Alps. Of interest are the descents via Wagenlücke to Wasserauen and from the interstation at pillar 2 to Unterwasser, which are often undertaken in good conditions. Both descents have no re-ascents, but they are in steep terrain and require good skiing skills. Säntis is often the starting point for other destinations in the Alpstein range. If the conditions are perfect, its steep slopes and couloirs can be skied down. However, many of these variants are very challenging and are not described (e.g. Chalbersäntis – Schooss or Tierwis – Schwägalp). The Alter Säntis guesthouse (call 071 799 11 60) is sometimes open. If it is, you can spend the night on Säntis.
Attention: The aerial cableway does not transport any skiers or snowboarders when the danger level for avalanches is "considerable" (3) or above! If in doubt, call 071 365 65 65. Otherwise you might be stuck on Schwägalp.
