Route description
Zermatt - Berghaus Trift
From Zermatt train station (1605 m), walk briefly along Bahnhofstrasse and turn (before the church!) up to the right to join the Triftweg. This leads quickly away from the hustle and bustle, climbing steeply up to a footbridge which crosses the Triftbach below the rocks (and Via Ferratas) of Fad. Sharp zig-zags now lead up to Alterhaupt (1961 m, Restaruant Edelweiss - 1 hour to here). From there turn right (NW) into the Triftbach gorge, pass the Stellistein (approx. 2060 m) and follow the steep path up to Trift (2337 m, mountain restaurant - another 1 hour).
Berghaus Trift - Rothornhütte SAC
From the Berghaus Trift, now follow a white-blue-white marked path NW to Vieliboden (2452 m). From here the right fork leads to the Mettelhorn; you want to take the left hand fork, continuing up the main valley. Mountain meadows slowly turn into scree slopes before you join onto the N lateral moraine of the Trift glacier. The path now follows the moraine crest, later zig-zagging up on terrain to its right, before crossing over left (W) to the Rothornhütte (3197 m), 3 hours.
Variant via Schweifinen
From Zermatt on the hiking trail via Balme and Schweifinen to the Chüeberg. Continue via Triftwäng to Vieliboden, where you meet the normal route above the mountain restaurant.
