A sediment tooth surrounded by crystalline rock

While everywhere around various tones of Gneiss-grey dominate, on top of Pizzo Molare the rock is multi-coloured. There is a wide range of red and brownish schist, light grey limestone and shiny white sugary dolomite. The variety of rocks is also responsible for the many colours of the flowers you encounter along the trails. They go from the clear white to fiery orange of the lilies and the most brilliant deep blue of the gentians.

Route description

Molare - Bassa di Narasa di Nara
From the bus stop Molare (1488 m) go into the village and to the church, where the well-marked hiking trail towards Bassa di Nara begins. The path, in the beginning wide, narrows after the crossing of the creek at Fornace (1565 m) and ascends through the forest up to the bifurcation at the fountain in Chèrz. Continue to ascend to Alpe Nara, where you sometimes need to guess the path in the pasture. The final ascent to Bassa di Nara is more visible and easier to find.
Bassa di Nara - Pizzo Molare
From Bassa di Nara (2123 m) go briefly towards Pizzo di Nara. Before the summit traverse its west face on blocks and scree to reach the grassy breach in the summit ridge at P. 2247. Without further difficulties, sometimes pathless, hike up to Bocchetta di Sasso Bianco (2404 m) with its prominent and very white rock formations. Now on a worn-out trail follow the ridge to the large summit cross of Pizzo Molare (2585 m).
Pizzo Molare - Rifugio Gana Rossa
From the summit of Pizzo Molare a fairly comfortable trail leads northward on the ridge down to the saddle at P. 2414, where many paths and sheep tracks merge. Continue more or less pathless on the Blenio side to a wide plateau at ca. 2530 m, east of Punta di Stou, from whose northernmost edge a small, but distinct path goes steeply down. As soon as possible turn left and ascend through the valley between Punta di Stou and Piancabella to reach P. 2469. On the block ridge or on its right face below Pizzo Bareta hike to P. 2432, where you come across a new faint path. It leads to the wide saddle Sella di Ör Languosa (2359 m) with its high voltage power line, at first on the north, then on the south of the crest. Within minutes you reach, pathless, Rifugio Gana Rossa (2270 m). There is no warden, but everything you need to spend the night, if you want to.
Rifugio Gana Rossa - Carì
From the Rifugio descend on a well-marked access trail to Segna and Alpe di Vignone at 1970 m. Now in a wide arc hike through the forest of Pesc Vert to Carì di Dentro and the bus stop at Carì (1622 m).

Difficulty / Material

Between Bassa di Nara and Bocchetta di Sasso Bianco the trail has occasionally slipped away in steep terrain so that sometimes the use of the hands is needed.

Between Punta di Stou and Rifugio Gana Rossa the itinerary is pathless on coarse block terrain, which requires some orientational skill to find the best way. With bad visibility the orientation is very difficult, as there are no markings whatsoever.
