A 360° panorama

In terms of view the mountains of the Leventina leave nothing to be desired. Some of them are even outstanding vantage points. If we had to name a winner, it would be Pizzo Forno. With its free-standing position – it is not part of the main chain, but juts out into the valley – it offers a multitude of perspectives. Monitor the weather forecast and choose a dry clear day, preferably in the fall, to undertake the tour.

Route description

Capanna Campo Tencia – Passo di Ghiacciaione
From Capanna Campo Tencia (2140 m) descend on the cabin access trail towards Dalpe as far as 2090 m, where the white-blue-white markings to Passo di Ghiacciaione begin. The alpine route ascends gently, following the grassy ledge of Senda del Ghiacciaio and crosses a number of torrents. One of them is equipped with a fixed rope. Here, caution is advised after rainy periods or in the afternoon during the snow-melting period. Afterwards the path runs along the edge of Böc di Comasnè; one passage is slightly exposed, but it can be bypassed pathless further up, if necessary. Gently descending below rock walls traverse to the rock basin of Lavina di Croslina. If you follow the cairns correctly, you can enjoy a grassy path for a little while, before you enter the vast scree and block fields further up. There could be snow late into the summer: if it is softened a little bit, but still carries your weight, this could be a huge advantage. As the cairns become sparser in the upper part, the question arises, where exactly is Passo di Ghiacciaione (2716 m)? Viewed from below, the col is immediately east of the last rock wall of Poncione del Laghetto. In other words: step on the ridge as far right as possible.
Passo di Ghiacciaione – Pizzo Forno – Passo di Ghiacciaione
From the col go southward a few metres, where we see new cairns leading eastward. The itinerary ascends on the south-west face of Pizzo Forno made of many, sometimes huge boulders, of which, however, many have yet to find their final position. This makes the final ascent to the target tiresome, but not really difficult. Finally, we stand on the highest point of Pizzo Forno (2907 m). After a well-deserved rest we go back the same route until below Passo di Ghiacciaione.
Passo di Ghiacciaione – Rifugio Alpe Sponda
At the col we follow the path leading down southward; it is more and more distinct and marked. Soon we reach the peculiar ditch of the Ri di Vedlè and follow it through green landscapes until Rifugio Alpe Sponda (1997 m).

Difficulty / Material

The ascent from Capanna Campo Tencia first crosses some torrents, then follows a slightly exposed passage (above Böc di Comasnè) and finally, on the last third, it leads on coarse, sometimes unstable scree to Passo di Ghiacciaione. From there to the summit it is easier (T3+), and even more so on the descent to Rifugio Alpe Sponda.

Waypoints

Passo di Ghiacciaione (2716 m)

Marked alpine col from Val Piumogna to Val Chironico. On the north side it is very impressive with its huge boulders and scree of all sizes.
