After closing of the Winterhorn lifts in autumn 2008, this tour has become a classic in the Urseren valley. With a similar aspect, an approach of equal difficulty, plus more options for the descent, the Winterhorn has probably already replaced the Stotzigen Firsten as a top ski, snowboard and snow shoe highlight.
Route description
Hospental – Ski depot
From the Hospental train station (1452 m), head through the village to the roundabout (1494 m) and up the old Gotthardstrasse to the tunnel (1557 m) of the newer Gotthardstrasse. Immediately after the tunnel bear right (southwest) through the area of the former ski slopes and pass the 'orphaned' mountain restaurant ca. 1958 m. Continue along the remains of the ski lift to the end (ca. 2340 m). Continue along the NE ridge to about 2500 m, then bear south (left) across the Winterhorn's NE flank to gain SE ridge.
Skidepot – Gipfel
Follow the SE-Ridge to the easily overcome summit rocks.
Descent
Follow the ascent route. (Or drop SE to the Gotthardpass road, or with very good conditions descend towards Realp.
Variant SW ridge
Continue over the S flank with little height gain to meet the SW ridge. Follow the SW-Ridge to the easily overcome summit rocks.
Additional information
- Remarks
-
A fairly avalanche-safe route apart from the summit cone. Depending on how well the large granite blocks in the summit area are snowed in, it is also possible to ascend with skis almost directly to the highest point. But you have to consider the avalanche situation!
