This is a very impressive ski tour high above Sargans. The gondola and ski lifts make climbing a high summit (with a dwindling glacier) possible without having to negotiate too many metres of vertical height. Depending on the conditions, the exposed summit slope may require the use of crampons and an ice axe. If there is enough snow, you can ski down to the valley on the marked ski runs. As the tour is normally finished around noon, you may combine it with skiing (on ski runs) and freeriding (off ski runs) in the afternoon.

Route description

Pizolhütte – ski depot

From the summit station of the chair lift at Laufböden (2225 m) take the ski lift to Pizolhütte (2221 m) or ascend on the winter hiking path. From Pizolhütte ascend westward on the summer hiking path, bypass Twärchamm to the north and traverse the bowl to the west of Bölli to reach Wildseeluggen (2492 m). Depending on the conditions there can be an avalanche risk. From Wildseeluggen ski down ca. 60 vertical metres to Wildsee. With good conditions you can still follow the summer hiking path to traverse south-westward the steep western face of Wildseehörner. Now ascend to reach the dwindling Pizolgletscher. Finally, ascend fairly steeply (30° on 50 vertical metres) to Pizolsattel (ca. 2790 m; unnamed on the map) located to the south-east of the main summit. Leave the skis a few metres above the col.

Ski depot – summit

From the ski depot continue on foot bypassing the first outcrop of the summit structure to the west. Now, using the steel cables that are most often buried in snow, follow the summit ridge to the summit and its cross.

Descent

On the ascent with a fair amount of re-ascending. From Twärchamm most skiers ski down the marvellous north-east slopes to Täli and the ski runs.
