THE vantage point in Bregaglia

Like a gigantic ship the long ridge of Piz Cam juts out from the sea of summits into the main Bregaglia valley above Vicosoprano. Its projected formation makes it an excellent vantage point, from where you not only oversee the whole Val Bregaglia, but also far north-eastward to the lake plateau of Upper Engadine. Traversing the entire north ridge (variant) is a treat for ridge walk lovers.

Route description

Casaccia – Pass da Cam

From Casaccia follow the road along the cemetery to the west end of the village, then hike on pastures to P. 1586 (bridge). Now ascend on the alp trail and the hiking trail through the forest into Val Maroz. Stay on the right-hand side of the Maira river until the last alp, Maroz Dent. A short descent leads to a beautiful alluvial plain and a wooden bridge, which crosses the Maira. After a bifurcation with signposts the path ascends steeply into Val da Cam. Traverse the valley southward and stay on the mountain trail until shortly below Pass da Cam (ca. 2455 m, nameless on the map).

Pass da Cam – Piz Cam

Before Pass da Cam (at ca. 2440 m) you can branch off left (east) and ascend across grassy knolls and through a small valley (some faint paths) into a distinct breach south of P. 2570. Follow the ridge easily up and down. After a short passage on some slabs and boulders you stand on one of Bregaglia’s most splendid vantage points.

Piz Cam – Lägh da Cam (beginning of the mountain hiking trail)

On the descent hike back about 150 m on the ridge to the next large grassy knoll, where you can descend left on a fairly steep grassy slope, avoiding rocky ledges. East of Lägh da Cam you hit upon the mountain hiking trail of the ascent.

Lägh da Cam (beginning of the mountain hiking trail) – Vicosoprano

From Lägh da Cam back on the mountain hiking trail to Plan Lo und Sdarva (1997 m). At the derelict chalet below Sdarva branch off sharply to the east. This trail can easily be overlooked when descending. If you go on until the fountain you have missed the trail. Without any difficulties continue to Vicosoprano.

Variant across the entire north ridge

Variant across the entire north ridge: from P. 2326 on the north end of Val da Cam branch off left (signpost) to a breach (Furcelletta, nameless on the map) between Val da Cam and Val Furcela. From the breach climb over the first steeply sloping obstacle on the ridge (P. 2480; T5) or bypass wide on the west (T4). Continue on the ridge to the summit. Ca. 10 min longer than the main route.

Difficulty / Material: The hiking trails through the valleys Val Maroz and Val da Cam are marked white-red-white. The summit is pathless and presents some steeper grass slopes and at the end an easy block ridge. The summit is only moderately exposed, nevertheless comfort with heights and sure-footedness are required.
