In ski touring season the Obri Bächlilicken is a popular way to access the Gaulihütte. In summer too, mountain hikers ascend to the pass from both sides. With favorable conditions, this route is reasonably straightforward. However, after strong snow melt (late summer) it can be that the bergschrund under the pass presents a major obstacle and the step in the Hiender glacier at about 2600 m can cause problems.
Route description
Gaulihütte - eastern glacial lake ca. 2150 m
From the Gaulihütte (2205 m) follow the marked foot path down to the small valley (Urnenband on the map). The path now leads north-east to a flat spot south of Gummen (2038 m). From there, its basically via ferrata up through the rocks to the easternmost glacial lake; 1 to 1½ hours from the hut.
Eastern glacier lake - ca. 2150 m - Obri Bächlilicken
Cross the suspension bridge over the Gaulibach (stream) to the southern shores of the lake, then climb southwest over scree to P. 2274 and the entrance to the Hiendertellti (valley). Cross to the right (SE) of the brook, and meet the Hiendertellti glacier at approx. 2450 m (path marked with white-blue-white). A steep section of the glacier at about 2650 m leads to a basin. From there, continue in a generally south-easterly direction, avoiding obvious crevasse zones, to the bergschrund. Cross the bergschrund (not so easy in late summer) and finally tackle the steep, mostly blank, flank up to the pass (chains).
Descent to Bächlitalhütte
When transitioning from the Gaulihütte to the Bächlitalhütte, allow 2 hrs for the descent to the hut.
