Varied and demanding hut approach via the Oberaletsch Glacier. If the hut is wardened, the exposed final ascent will be secured, the traverse on the glacier marked and a fixed rope will be in place on the «Steigglen». The climb over the Grossen Aletschgletscher via Inners Aletschi has become very dangerous and can no longer be recommended.
Route description
Belalp - Hotel Belalp
From the top station of the Blatten - Belalp cable car follow the flat winter hiking path 2 km northeast to Aletschbord and Hotel Belalp (2130 m).
Hotel Belalp - Hirmi (Weggabelung 1971 m)
Continue slightly downhill round the corner till where the the summer path splits at Hirmi (P. 1971).
Hirmi (1971 m) - Ski depot
It is better and much safer in winter to take the lower route down to the huts at 1839 m, from where you can ascend the convenient ramp northwards beside an old moraine. Where the moraine merges into the slope another moraine, slightly offset and more prominent begins; aim to the right of this, so you're cutting between the two, and climb steadily up northeastwards above steeper terrain on your right to a small terrace above the glacier gorge. When the hut is wardened, poles should mark the point (approx. 2220 m) from which you should descend onto the the Oberaletsch Glacier. The hut should now be visible (if its sunny). Follow the rough but crevasse-free glacier northwest to the junction of the Beich and Oberaletsch glaciers, then steer right around the rocky foot of the Grosses Fusshorn's SW ridge. You can leave the skis at the foot of the ladders; you won't need them at the hut!
Skidepot - Oberaletschhütte
Climb various ironmongery southwards to reach the hut (about 160 m altitude gain).
