"Der dick beschäumte Fluss dringt durch der Felsen Ritzen / Und schiesst mit gäher Kraft weiter über ihren Wall (meaning: the thickly-foaming stream cuts through the cliff top, and shoots with great force out from the wall)" are words from Albrecht von Haller's didactic poem "The Alps", published in 1732, which describe the 287 m Staubbachfall above the town of Lauterbrunnen. Albrecht's enthusiasm for the alps, in particular the Bernese Oberland, is displayed in his 490 verse masterpiece, wherein he praises the wild beauty of the mountains along with the gaiety and freedom of its inhabitants. Thanks to this, plus the great advertisement of other poets, travel writers, painters and travel organisation, the classic glacier sculpted U-shaped valley of Lauterbrunnental, into which no less than 72 waterfalls pour, has become a dream holiday destination for civilisation-stricken urbanites. Since 2006, there has been a new attraction - one which offers close ups of some of the valley's waterfalls, some great exposure and a spectacular birds eye view: the Via Ferrata at Mürren. This runs horizontally along the upper reaches of the great limestone walls, crosses the Mürrenbach via a three-cable bridge or optional Tyrollean.

Route description
Additional information
- Character
-
A well secured, mostly downhill, 2.2 km long via ferrata along the stepped upper edge of the Mürrenfluh between the car-free villages of Mürren and Gimmelwald. Quite varied in difficulty with (too) many muddy, even slippery passages followed suddenly by quite difficult key passages, like the really airy tight rope walk high above the valley bottom, and worst of all the final walk over a very shaky suspension bridge (fortunately avoidable). Sun in the morning; however, do not start too early in the autumn because it first has to come out from behind the high mountains. This Via Ferrata is open from mid-June until late October.
- Time
-
Alltogether 3 hrs.
Approach ¼ hr.,
Via Ferrata 2¾ hrs
- Signalisation
-
Brown signposts lead from the village centre.
- Descent
-
The whole via ferrata is in principle a descent (-340 vertical meters).
The exit is just a few steps away from the Gimmelwald cable car station: a comfortable descent option after the exposure.
