Well marked approach, by which you can reach both the Monte Leone hut (2848 m) and the Bivacco B. Farello (2748 m). It leads through a very beautiful, varied landscape.

Route description

Simplonpass - Chaltwassertälli - Monte Leone Hütte

From Simplon Pass (1998 m) follow the marked hut path to the water pipe and continue E alongside until it stops ca. 2160 m. Continue in the same direction to cross the broad, old glacier bed of the Chaltwasser glacier, rising steadily all the while to just below P. 2514 where the path turns N. Now cross slabby terrain to reach the striking moraine which marks the south side of Chaltwassertälli. From here you can either follow the moraine in its entirety or, after a short distance, move left into the Chaltwassertälli valley itself (a tad more easy going). Both options bring you to the SW rim of the Chaltwassersee (literally "cold water lake") basin. The Monte Leone hut (2848 m) can be reached by following the marked path through the scree to its north.
