If there is sufficient snow, this is a classic tour in the Ticino foothills offering a unique panorama. From the summit one overlooks the entire Lugano bay, and if you ascend at night or spend the night at Capanna Monte Bar, you look down to a sea of lights. A few steps below the summit is Capanna Monte Bar, which was renovated in 2017. It has a warden almost all year round and is a wonderful place to stop for a bite to eat. These slopes were already skied at the beginning of the 19th century. The rich gentlemen of Lugano ascended on foot, while countrywomen carried their skis up to the cabin or the summit in baskets.
Route description
Corticiasca - Monte Bar
From Corticiasca (1001 m) or Albumo (1056 m) follow the road across a small valley at ca. 1080 m and past the Piazza farm. Leave the road at its end to follow a trail almost to Pian Sotto at 1154 m. Ascend some gentle knolls north-eastward past P. 1196. You can reach this point by leaving the road before the large farm to ascend directly to P. 1196 via Cozzo. Crossing a forest road at ca. 1260 m, ascend to Alpe Musgatina (1383 m). Continue to ascend northward to Capanna Monte Bar (1608 m) via P. 1499. Now on a wide ridge ascend the open slopes, which are characterised by the magnificent view over the bay of Lugano. You reach the summit with its antennae.
