Mattalpplatte & Galtigengrat 1650 m Alpine climbing
One of the most beautiful climbing areas in Central Switzerland, located at 1600m altitude on the south side of Pilatus along the mountain trail between Alpnachstad and Kulm. In the water runnel limestone above Alp Matt a whole range of easy to moderately difficult, well-secured pitches provide for a full day's climbing. The slabby routes are suitable for children, beginners and 'plaisir' climbers alike. The serenity is disturbed only periodically by the Pilatusbahn funicular railway. Handkerum, the steepest cog railway in the world, makes the trip to the small climbing paradise of Alpnachersee suitable for children. The approach (descending) from Kulm is a bit less exhausting, but takes as long as the forty-minute ascent from middle station Ämsigen. If you take the first train in the morning, you will reach the wall before the first rays of the sun, which on cloudless days warm the rough rock considerably.
