Marchhorn can be accessed from four starting points: All'Acqua to the north, Rifugio Maria Luisa to the west, Capanna Cristallina to the north-east (across Bocchetta di Formazzora), and Capanna Basòdino to the south-east. This ascent offers a magnificent view to Basòdino and its glacier. Marchhorn is also an interesting way of traversing from the Basòdino and Robièi area to Valle Bedretto.
Route description
Capanna Basòdino – Marchhorn
From Capanna Basòdino (1856 m) in a valley with a creek follow the road westward to the summit station of the Robièi aerial cableway. Ascend on the right bank of the creek. After a first steep stretch the ascent flattens. You reach the Randinascia cabins (2156 m), then continue along the creek to a small lake (2206 m). Now ascend north-westward to follow a ridge towards Bocchetta di Val Maggia. Here turn northward to reach a breach (Passo dei Matörgn W, ca. 2850 m, unnamed and uncharted on the map) between P. 2904 and Pizzo Fiorina (2925 m). Ascend below Pizzo Fiorina and on the east face of Marchhorn to reach the ski depot.
From the ski depot follow a short, easy snow-covered ridge, which includes a short, rocky, south-facing stretch. On skis or on foot ascend to the summit (2962 m). The ridge can be avoided by traversing below the summit structure to reach the summit from the north-east.
Descent
On the ascent or towards Val Bedretto (Bocchetta di Formazzora / Bocchetta di Val Maggia).
