Demanding hut approach starting from Adelboden

This approach to the Lohnerhütte is very demanding, and follows many ladders and fixed ropes through some steep rocky terrain. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are prerequisites. There are two similarly difficult variants, which form an interesting combination for the ascent and descent: An upper one over the Schryberschreck rock step and a lower one over the so-called Leitereweg.

Route description

Margelibrügg - I de Schrickmatte

From the Margelibrügg, cross the bridge over the Entlige (river) and follow the road to the Bunderlebächli. Make a right before the bridge and follow the hiking path, first along on the western, and later the eastern side of the stream towards Ahorni. Thereafter you climb more steeply to Alp Vordere Bunder and then south to "I de Schrickmatte" (another alp).

Upper Variant: Schryberschreck

From "I de Schrickmatte" first follow the road which leads to a gravel quarry, then continue over the rock step known as "Schryberschreck". The grassy ridge (P. 2005) is reached via a rock couloir (steel cable). Climb diagonally southwards over steep pastures below the Nünihorn to another rock barrier, the Zürchertret, which is surmounted via a chain to gain another grassy rib at P. 2157. From here, a relatively flat traverse leads you over scree (over a hollow, a rib and another hollow) and finally one more large grassy ridge from which the hut is just a stone's through away.

Lover Variant: Leiternweg

From I de Schrickmatte, first walk horizontally in a southwesterly direction under a striking rock tower. Afterwards the route follows several steep steps with ladders, crosses through several deep channels and ribs and gains some sheep pastures. Traverse diagonally upwards to a shepherd's hut (approx. 1920 m). This lies on the grass ridge that bounds the deep ditch coming down from Tierchumi. Climb the ridge, doging a steeper section on the left (chain) and reach the rock barrier Zürchertret via a scree slope where you meet the main route again.

Various: Zürchertritt
The name Zürchertret comes from Peter Zürcher, aka the Lohner-Zürcher. Although the family lived in very modest circumstances, they laid the foundation stones for the Lohnerhütte above Adelboden. At various locations along the Hüttenweg, plaques commemorate the life of this productive family living at the foot of the Lohner.
