To the eagles nest, high above the Unteraargletscher

Exciting and adventurous, though for experienced hikers not overly dangerous, this is a very rewarding tour. Those who brave the 4 - 4 ½ hr ascent from the Grimsel Hospiz along the northern shore of Lake Grimsel will be treated with wild and rare natural treasures including stands of swiss stone pine or 'Arven' trees, thriving highland bog and rare flora. For those who manage the final climb from the glacier to the hut, the often described magic or special atmosphere of the place will become apparent. The small, original Lauteraarhütte remains - whether as a stopover for a mountain tour or as the turning point for a hike - a rewarding, alpine hiking destination with overwhelming views.

Route description

Summerloch - Lauteraarhütte

Take the cable car down from the Grimsel Hospiz or start directly at the post bus stop Summerloch (no parking spaces at the moment). North of the dam the marked path (information board Lauteraarhütte and Aarbiwak) starts and leads steeply up the height of the dam. Through a tunnel carved into the rock (possibly flashlight needed) on the N side of the reservoir, the path leads into the valley to the end of the reservoir and to the "Gletcherweib" (glacier woman) (2 ½ h). Now over the glacier forefield following the beautiful mountain path in 2h up to the hut.

Old access from Grimsel Hospice (closed until end of construction work!)

During the construction of the dam the former usual access is closed: From the Postauto/ bus stop at the Grimselhospiz take the steps down onto the dam. Cross this, climb back up and pass through a tunnel.
