In winter, you cannot usually drive all the way to Bodenberge. Drive to the "Schibogenbrüggli" (Sagerberg, end of the tarred road). The winter ascent does not follow the usual trail in summer along the lower Geissfad, but via Ellbogen and Päuggenegg with a short descent to the hut. In the upper part, individual marker poles make it easier to find the route.
Route description
(Erstfeld –) Bodenberg – Kröntenhütte
From Erstfeld train station head west over the Reuss (river) to Taubach and the entrance to Erstfeldtal (the valley). Follow the road into the valley via Sagerberg (786 m) (here, depending on snow conditions you may also take an Alpentaxi / drive up to Bodenberg (994 m). The path leads up through forest which grows on old avalanche terrain (Ribi). Stick to the path, or with more snow continue a little further up to 1300 m, then cut across right (westwards) through the forest to Alp Ellbogen (approx. 1320 m). Climb southwest past Gross Stein (big stone - pretty obvious), then follow the occasional marking pole W / NW round to Päuggenegg (approx. 2000 m); the highest point of the ascent. A short slip'n'slide westward brings you to the hut at 1903 m.
Variant: from Bergstation Wilerli
If there is snow down to the valley and you can't drive up, you can also take a small cableway up to Wilerli - Emmeten. A scenic choice but rather pointless.
