A box of cairns
Kistenstöckli looks like an extinct volcano rising from the plain around Val Frisal, Bifertenstock and Limmerensee. Its position in the high mountains, the Rhaeto-Romanic name Muot da Rubi and the countless cairns on the flat summit underline the uniqueness of Kistenstöckli. It is surprisingly easy to climb: the exposed passages on the normal route from the west are equipped with solid chains. Although it is possible to undertake the tour in one day, it is recommended to spend a night in the tiny, renovated Bifertenhütte. The cabin offers an ambiance that has become rare these days when sophisticated high-tech constructions are being built even in high alpine environments. Depending on the temperatures the tour can be undertaken as described or in the opposite sense. The cool passage through the valley of the Flem and the sunbathed ridge of Alp Quader can be combined at the hiker’s discretion.

The steep rocky steps are equipped with chains and fixed ropes. Some climbing skills are required to reach the flat, exposed summit towers. The ascent is unmarked, but easy to find. On the last stretch the itinerary is on the northern slope so it is snow-covered until late in the spring and it can be icy early in the fall. In this case, the ascent is not recommended unless you have climbing gear (rope, axe, crampons).
