The normal route to Grassen offers a relatively simple and interesting glacier tour through impressionable landscapes. It is therefore often used as a training tour from the Sustlihütte. The first section follows tracks to Stoessenfirn (glacier). This easily-accessible glacier provides access to the Stössensattel, where you can enjoy a magnificent view into the Engelberg valley. The ensuing ridge which leads to the summit is wide and easy to walk. The imposing south and east walls of the neighboring Titlis stand out on this gentle final climb to the summit cap.
Route description
Sustlihütte - Stössenfirn glacier
From the Sustlihütte (2256 m) hike on a marked path to the Stössenfirn glacier.
Stössenfirn - Stössensattel - Grassen
Cross the Stössenfirn to gain the Stössensattel (2782 m). Due to glacial retreat, there is a longer section of rock climbing to be mastered by the Stossensattel, but a fixed rope mounted by the guardian of the Sustlihütte is helpful here. The broad north east ridge, bound on the north by the Firnalpelifirn glacier, provides easy access to the summit plateau.
Descent
Follow the route of descent.
