Adventurous Wanderings!
The Glecksteinhütte is accessible via just one hiking trail - but what a trail it is! From the gentle hills above Grindelwald, the mountain path leads cleverly through a barrier of vertigo inducing cliffs to the top station of the old Wetterhorn lift. This was the very first cable car to be in operation in Switzerland, but was open only for a short time. Rounding the corner the path leads initially down into the glacial valley. The air gets colder but the views are spectacular; first down upon the remnants of the old retreating glacier and later to the main body of the Oberer Grindelwald Glacier, suspended impressively beside you as you make the steep final climb to the hut. Along the way a powerful waterfall will threaten to blast you off the track. Have a waterproof ready to throw over your head, take it slowly and use the hand rails. Finally, one large zig-zag brings you up to the commanding location of the Glecksteinhütte where refreshment from the hut kitchen will feel well deserved! Note: Gleckstein literally means licking-stone - don't be surprised in the evening to find Steinbok staring at you through the window as they come to enjoy the salty surface of the outlying wall.
