The approach to the Etzli hut through the narrow Etzlital (valley) requires very safe conditions. The steep avalanche prone slopes are hardly noticeable from the valley floor. There are some alternative, attractive approaches leading over passes from Surselva. These approaches can include a summit visit and are also suitable descent options from the Etzli.
Route description
Bristen – Etzlihütte SAC
From the Golzern bus stop (832 m) follow the mountain road past Acherli (899 m) to Herrenlimi (1028 m) in the Etzlital. Continue along the road into the valley and up to Hinter Etzliboden (1330 m). If there is enough snow east of the Etzlibach (steam), continue over rough terrain into the Rossboden basin (1652 m). If the snow is thin follow the summer path west of the stream to a prominent hairpin bend, then cross back to the other side of the stream. The Gulmenstutz (31 °, 160 m ascent) is bypassed via the Etzlibach couloir, which is usually well filled with snow. Continue through the basin at Gulmen, then up to Müllersmatt (1987 m). From here, follow the ridge west to reach the hut.
