Vom leichten zum schweren - der Zusteig zum Ostegg-Kletttersteig
The approach to the Ostegghütte via ferrata starts easily on the well-known trail from Alpiglen direction Bonern. First the well-known Eigertrail branches off to the right, one and a half kilometers later the way to the Ostegghütte and access to the via ferrata. The path slowly becomes narrower, less distinct, steeper and more exposed. Various tricky spots are made easier with fixed climbing ropes in summer. Several gullies are traversed until you reach a saddle at about 2050m with the striking cairn. Usually the via ferrata set and helmet are put on here.
Route description
Alpiglen to the turn-off for Ostegghütte
From the station Alpiglen (1616 m) follow the Eiger Trail to the junction at P. 1758 of the trail to Bonera and Grindelwald. On this down to a brook (bridge, 1734 m), then more or less horizontal to the turnoff (about 1750 m) for the Eiger Ostegghütte (¾ hours).
Junction Eigertrail - Start
Now ascend, traversing eastward through steep, rocky grass slopes; some sections are secured with ropes, though one tricky passage in a creek bed is not. Finally, steeply up to a grass saddle (2028 m, big cairn). Continue on a scree slope to the beginning of the via ferrata at about 2060 meters (1 hour).
Variant: descent via Bonera - Gletscherschlucht
Alternatively to a descent back to Alpiglen, follow the trail via Bonera to Hotel Gletscherschlucht (1014 m) and ascend up through the village to reach train station Grindelwald (3½ hours).
