Combin de Grafeneire 4314 m Ski tour
Combin de Grafeneire is the highest peak of the wide, glaciered range called Grand Combin. The altitude and the isolated location in the very west of the Pennine Alps are the reasons why the mountain is visible from all sides and from afar. It belongs to a rather complex range, which is heavily glaciered on the N side. On the SE and the NE side some small leftovers of glaciers exist. The S side, however, is completely ice-free and rocky. The ascent on the N side is in an almost himalayan atmosphere. The itinerary "Gardien" on the NW is clearly to be preferred over the itinerary "Corridor", as it is threatened by ice-fall. But also "Gardien" is hard to assess, as the condition of the seracs is changing constantly. "Corridor" can only be negotiated on the descent. This means that Aiguille du Croissant, Mur de la Côte, and finally the "Corridor" itself with its threatening seracs need to be traversed. Also the rocky SSW side has a ski touring route (starting point Cabane de Valsorey). It requires alpine techniques and perfect snow and weather conditions. Wonderful view from Monviso to Montblanc and to the Valais and Bernese Alps.
