Scrambling fun at Euschelspass
Euschelspass is a popular and easy col between Jaun and Schwarzsee, which can also be undertaken by cyclists. The tour is attractive, as it offers a lake and the peculiarity that in summer almost every house along the way is a restaurant or "buvette", as the locals say. East and west of the col there are impressive rock faces. It is best to climb Chällihorn on the interesting route from Jaun to Schwarzsee via Euschelspass.
Route description
Jaun – Chälli
From Jaun follow the signpost «zur Grotte». In the forest above the road you reach an alcove with a statue of the Virgin Mary. Now follow the steep trail through the forest to the ruins of the Bellegarde castle (1179 m) destroyed in 1407 by Bernese troops. For a short while ascend on the Euschelspass road to P. 1291, where the good path to the Chälli alp branches off. On this path ascend to Chälli.
Chälli – Chällihorn
Past a flagpole ascend a ridge westward and follow the faint path in very steep terrain which leads through a small forest to an open grassy slope. You reach the ridge a few metres south of the summit cross on Chällihorn (1969 m). Ascend to the highest point.
Chällihorn – Euschelspass
Descend the slightly overgrown south ridge to P. 1900 and then follow a distinct ridge with faint paths to Euschelspass (1567 m).
Euschelspass – Schwarzsee Bad
Follow the road to the "buvette" at Unter Bödeli (1240 m). Now on an unmarked trail descend to a pedestrian bridge (1107 m), and again on the marked hiking trail descend to Schwarzsee Bad via Hubel Rippa (1140 m). Alternatively continue to follow the road from Unter Bödeli to Schwarzsee Gypsera. Both end-points offer the opportunity to swim in the lake.
