This obscure hut on the S side of the Greina is rarely visited in winter due to the demanding approach; in fact it is only reachable via the Greina plateau.
Route description
Ghirone - Capanna Motterascio
From Ghirone-Cozzera (approx. 1290 m) ascend Val Camadra northwards until a steep climb leads round to the E, where you meet the Brenno della Greina stream, just above the Capanna Scaletta (2201 m). Cross the stream to P. 2247, then continue east to Passo della Greina, cross the Greina plateau, then bear south to Crap la Crusch (rock with an old iron cross on top). From here follow the valley, SE at first, and reach the hut over the broad Alpe di Motterascio (having drawn three sides of a giant square with your skis!)
Additional information
- Crux
-
The ascent through the Val Camadra requires very safe conditions; LARGE avalanches can travel out out onto the valley floor.
- Remarks
-
The Capanna Motterascio is located to the south of the Greina plateau at the foot of Piz Terri. It is not directly accessible from the valley in winter. Nevertheless, it is occasionally visited from neighboring huts Terri, Medel, Scaletta, or - as described here from Ghirone, through the Val Camadra.
