From the larches to the glaciers beyond.

The normal approach to the Capanna del Forno leads from Maloja through Val Forno to Plan Canin, turns right there and reaches the glacial basin of the Vadrecc del Forno. Over gradually solidifying moraine terrain it leads up the flank, and finally past beautiful rocks to the hut. An interesting, somewhat longer and more difficult alternative (see variant) is the also marked "Panoramaweg", which first leads to Val Muretto, then to Laghetto dei Rossi and finally crosses the western flank of Pizzi dei Rossi.

Route description

Passo del Maloja - Lägh da Cavloc - Plan Canin

From the post office in Maloja (main bus stop, also for the Engadinbus) follow the main road through the village. Immediately after the Giacometti sports shop, a road branches off to the left (signpost). Head via Plan Fedoz to the holiday center Salecina (P. 1793), cross the Orlegna (stream) and follow a forest road to P. 1822. Turn right and reach the Lägh da Cavloc (lake) through a pretty valley. Take the quieter west side of the lake to Alp da Cavloc (if you facny a break you can make a short detour to Ristorante Do Cavloccio on the east bank). From Alp da Cavloc continue onwards and imperceptibly upwards to Plan Canin (1975 m), where the turning for Panoramaweg (see below) / Passo del Muretto is located.

Plan Canin - Capanna del Forno

For the normal approach choose the righthand path and continue along the main, now Upper Val Forno. Follow the valley floor right (W) of the stream to the small hump at P. 2232, then cross to the left (E) side. Continue along the glacier forefiled to the lower reachs of the Vadrec del Forno (glacier), then climb up eastwards to the hut; the path cuts back first NE, making one large zigzag, before turning south once more and climbing over hte rocky slope to the hut.

Panoramaweg

An interesting alternative to the normal route, either during ascent or descent, giving the option for a nice round trip. From the signpost at Plan Canin (1975 m, take the lefthand path into Val Muretto up to P. 2301. Turn right (NE) cutting back under cliffs past two small lakes towards P. 2403. Climb southwards up the shady N-facing flank and cross the Valun dei Rossi gully to the west to P. 2624. Move round onto the rubble strewn western flanks of Pizzi dei Rossi and make a gradual, diagonal ascent to the lake at P. 2751 (easy to loose the 'path' in places). Now just a gentle descent to P. 2711, and steeper S-facing flank and you'll be at the hut (around to the right, beneath the final rocks. Time: Plan Canin - Capanna del Forno 3 hours 15 minutes (Maloja to hut 5 hours) Difficulty: T4-, especially because of the pathless sections over block fields between P. 2624 and P. 2751. Beware of snow fields after P. 2624, which can often linger into mid-summer and make the crossing an exposed, delicate affair! (Current information is available from the hut attendant).

Difficulty / Material: The last section leads through moraine debris, talus and boulders, which are not always stable; here and there the track is easily lost. So it is worth keeping an eye on the markings. The bridge over the Orlegna (approx. 2220 m) is normally removed around mid-October, after which the hut trail is no longer recommended.
