Visiting Val Pontirone

Val Pontirone, the southernmost side valley to Valle di Blenio (but part of the commune of Biasca), is one of those valleys that make Ticino so interesting: it is wild, rocky, steep and secluded. Nevertheless, it is full of mountain pasture huts, which have been converted into vacation homes by the people of Biasca. Driving through the valley alone is a special experience. From the uppermost hamlet Biborgh a good trail leads up across several alps to Capanna Cava, a simple, welcoming cabin with its own little mountain lake.

Route description

Biborgh – Capanna Cava
From Biborgh descend on the alp road to Ponte di Giümela and Ponte di Cengio. Right after the bridge ascend on a marked trail through the forest, later in pastures to Alpe di Sceng. Now hike westward, crossing the road several times, to the plateau of Alpe di Cava. At the end in a curve to the right ascend to Capanna Cava.

Additional information

Departure point

Biborgh (1301 m)

Time

From Biborgh an alp road winds its way up to Alpe di Cava. However, from Ponte di Giümela on it is very rough, steep and only suited for true SUVs (small parking at 1990 m). From there to the cabin it is a 20 minute walk.
