Route description
Haldenstein - Funtanjola - Calandahütte SAC
A mountain road leads through the forest from Haldenstein (571 m) in a few sweeping hairpin bends via Arella (988 m) and Funtanolja (1494 m) up to Haldensteiner Alp and slightly further to the Calandahütte on its little hillock (P. 2074).
Variant: via Berg
From Haldenstein you can also take the steeper hiking path up through the forest, leaving the main route at the first hairpin (P. 689, direction Burrguine Grottenstein / Lichtenstein). Turn left at P. 807, follow the path up through Steinwald past Burrguinen Grottenstein, join the mountain road once more and climb in 4 big zigzags to Berg (approx. 1500 m) After Alpboden (1710 m) the forest thins out. Pass Neusäss (1874 m) and Altsäss, where you join the normal approach route.
Variant: via Batänia
Start as for Variant 2, but continue northwards along the mountain road past Sasserdunt and Bärenhag (P. 1078). Climb north abot the cliffs then cut back SW towards Rütigaden and Batänja (P. 1399). Continue past Alpboden to Altsäss where you'll meet the notmal approach.
