The normal approach to Cabane du Vélan leads, annoyingly, exactly through the corner of four OS maps.
Route description
Bourg-St-Pierre - Cordonne - turning for Cabane de Valsorey
From the church of Bourg-St-Pierre (1632 m) head east beneath the main road, south past a water intake, then SE beneath Les Ronques (1826 m). Follow a road marked “Valsorey, Vélan” passing above Cordonne (1840 m). Stay on the lefthand (NE) side of the Valsorey (stream) traversing the southern slopes of Pointe de Penn to the bridge (2151 m). Before the bridge climb left up to Chalet d’Amont (2195 m), just under 2 hours.
Turning for Cabane de Valsorey - Cabane du Vélan
Cross the bridge to the south (2151 m). and climb past P. 2260 to a steeper slope that leads in various hairpin bends to P. 2532 on the moraine ridge then up this to the Cabane du Vélan (2642 m), 1 1⁄4 hours.
If the streams opposite Chalet d’en Bas have a lot of melt water, you can also cross the Le Valsorey stream at this alp, then climb a steep ridge and reach the main path a little above the bridge (2151 m).
