The cabin is most often reached from Arolla across Pas de Chèvre. The trail was recently equipped with new ladders and steel cables. The route is part of the Haute-Route starting in Verbier. A magnificent panorama to the high mountains opens as soon as you reach Pas de Chèvre.
Route description
Arolla – Pas de Chèvre
From Arolla (1968 m) either ascend on the ski run or take the ski lift of Les Fontanesses 1 to the summit station (ca. 2470 m; using the lift saves 1½ h). From here ascend westward across a plateau and in an increasingly steep bowl to Pas de Chèvre (2854 m).
Pas de Chèvre
The W side of this col is a vertical rock wall which is equipped with metal ladders and steps. The passage looks more dangerous than it actually is. Attach your skis to your backpack and descend the ladders. For security you can use a via ferrata kit.
Pas de Chèvre – cabin
Then, ski down to reach Glacier de Cheilon. Cross it south-westward, then westward. You reach the left rim of the glacier south of the rock island where the cabin is located. Turn right and ascend to the cabin.
