Long, but charming approach. The less difficult, even longer approach via the Roc de la Vache is a nice alternative. Or if you prefer a challenge and some exposure, try the variant over the Pas du Chasseur (for details see approach for the Cabane d 'Arpitettaz).
Route description
Zinal - Alp Le Chiesso - P. 2477
Follow the street through Zinal (1674 m) to the village of Verletta. Then take the footpath eastwards to the Torrent de Tracuit (stream). Cross the footbridge and climb steeply through open larch forest and meadows to Alp Le Chiesso (P. 2078 on the map), 1 1⁄4 hours.
From there, a couple of large hairpin bends brings you to a higher footpath at P. 2254. Turn right and follow this (south) diagonally uphill beneath cliff bands to a steep step, north of Roc de la Vache. Climb up to where the terrain flattens out (2477 m), 1 hour.
P. 2477 - Cabane de Tracuit
From P. 2477, climb up to the alp huts of Composana (approx. 2580 m). Continue on towards the clearly visible cross at P. 2890; just below the cross the path traverses to the east. From roughly 3000 m altitude, the path steers NE over scree and talus, and finally climbs steeply through a small rocky couloir (fixed chains) to gain the Col de Tracuit (3256 m) and the hut on the right.
An old path lead up to the cross then more closely in under the SW rocks of Diablon des Dames to the Col de Tracuit, but this is not recommended.
Variant: via Le Chiesso - Roc de la Vache
From Zinal you can also follow a tarmac road south along the main valley floor until it splits beneath the Le Besso. Cross the Zinal stream, and the Torrent de l'Arpitetta to P. 1903. Climb NE through sparse larch forest up to Alp von Le Chiesso (2081 m) then diagonally northwards past P. 2154 (the "Pas du Chasseur" route crosses here) and rightwards onto a flattening (ca. 2230 m, north of Lac d'Arpitetta). Continue the steady ascent NE past Tsijière de la Vatse and cross the top of Roc de la Vache to join the normal approach.
