Engaging hut approach via the airy but well secured «Pas d'Encel». Decent re-fuel option at Alp Bonavau, roughly half way. The variant east of the Saufla makes for a good alternative ascent / descent option.
Route description
Champéry – Grand Paradis
From Champéry train station, follow the main road SW for 1.5 km and cross the Vièze at P. 1045. After another crossing at (P. 1055) you'll come to the Grand Paradis cableway. Large parking area.
Grand Paradis – Bonavau – Pas d'Encel – Cabane de Susanfe
From here the path is marked white-red-white. Follow the "Barme" foot path for approx. 500 m; after a small bridge, turn left at the sign. Soon you'll cross the main street (possible parking here). Then the path zigzags up through the Forêt de Bonavau to the Alp of the same name (1550 m; food and sleeping options). From Alp Bonavau cntour SE onto increasingly exposed ledges beneath the east ridge of the Dent de Bonavau and into the Saufla gorge and the Pas d'Encel (1814 m), an airy but easy section (safety chains) with steps carved into the rock. Cross the Saufla (stream) at the bridge P. 1798 and round (E) onto the S-facing bank of the Susanfe valley which leads gently upwards to the hut.
Variant: via Roc Coupé
It is also possible to ascend the NE side of the Saufla valley directly from the Paradis parking, via an exposed section on the Roc Coupé, then later cross the suspension bridge at 1500 m and traverse briefly W to join the main approach path at P. 1543.
