We describe the complete approach from the valley to the hut. However, it is possibe to drive to the Prize d’eau de Saleina (approx. 1560 m). When entering the Vallon d’Arpette de Saleina, note the forested moraine crest (Crête de Saleina), which seems to close off the entire Val Ferret.
Route description
Praz-de-Fort - Le Chanton - Prize d'eau
From Praz de Fort head SW past the hamlet of Le Chanton. At P. 1187, take the right-hand turn in order to cross the crossroads at P. 1242. Follow the road, staying N of the Reuse de Saleina (stream) until P. 1331 (From here a small road leads on to Prize d’eau de Saleina; if driving to there, the approach is shortened to 3 hours). From P. 1331 on foot, cross the stream to the south and ascend the path to Prize d’eau de Saleina.
Prise d'eau - Plan Monnay - Cabane de Saleina
The path climbs up onto the forested lateral moraine of the Glacier de Saleina which leads to a rocky step secured with cables and ladder. This in turn leads up to Plan Monnay, 1¼ hours. The gentle grassy ridgeline is followed to the striking flat stone known as La Gare (ca. 2265 m). The last section is steep. Climb the scree flank to the west of Petit Clocher des Planereuses then, from 2500 m slowly bear right (west) and finally zigzag up over some rocky steps to Cabane de Saleina (2698 m), just under 2 hours.
