Normal approach to the fantastically located Cabane d'Arpitettaz. The panorama during the ascent definitely compensates for the effort. The “Pas du Chasseur” is a shorter but more difficult option, best chosen for the ascent. The delightful "detour" via Le Chiesso described here is better suited for the descent.
Route description
Zinal - Le Chiesso - Lac d'Arpitetta
From Zinal (1675 m) follow the paved road southwards to the bridge at P. 1674 over the La Navisence river. On the left (W) bank, pass the sports field and continue to the bridge at 1730 m (turn off for Pas du Chasseur). Continue straight on, up through the forest to Le Vichiesso (1855 m, large cross). Follow the wide, mostly horizontal path then cross the Zinal stream to the east (left) and Torrent de l'Arpitetta (P. 1903, also a stream). Now climb leisurely up through sparese larch forest to the alp of Le Chiesso (2081 m, no name on the map), 2 hours.
From Alp Le Chiesso (2081) you can ascend a small path directly to the lake (see variant) or take a leisurely path diagonally left to just east of P. 2154 where the route "Pas du Chasseur" joins on ( see route "from Zinal via the Pas du Chasseur"). Continue diagonally north around the old moraine, then turn sharply right (SE) ca. 2200 m towards Lac d’Arpitetta (approx. 2230 m).
Variant: Le Chiesso (2081 m) - Lac d'Arpitetta
Unmarked, steeper short cut.
Lac d'Arpitetta - Cabane d'Arpitetta
Cross the grazing pastures of L’Arpitetta, contour onto the S-facing flank, then ascend gradually to Les Leisses in small zigzags. Cross onto a scree flank and over two small glacial streams at P. 2593, then make the final leisurely ascent up to the hut (2786 m), 2½ hours.
