Very nice approach high above the rear Saas Valley. It used to be possible to take the cable car to Plattjen, but this has been out of service in summer for the last few years. You can get there on foot via beautiful mountain trails from Saas-Fee or Saas-Almmagell. A variant starts at the Zermeiggern reservoir and meets the main route shortly after the "Heidefridhof".
Route description
Plattjen - Heidefridhof - Britanniahütte
The top station of Plattjen (2570 m) can be reached via some beautiful trails in around 2 hours from Saas-Fee (2.5 hours from Saas-Almagell). Head southwards over scree and talus, then cross the steep SE flank of the Mittaghorn (caution: ibex!) Pass the Heidefridhof via a shallow depression SE of the Egginer and follow the ledge SW into less hazardous terrain. The alternative approach from Zermeiggern joins here. Continue on the white-blue-white marked footpath; at the junction at P. 2769 a right turn would lead to Egginerjoch, left to the Brittaniahütte. Pass P. 2863, then left of the lake, climb a rock crest on the left, and reach the firn slope below the hut. Continue to the pass and the hut on the right.
Variant from Zermeiggern
From Zermeiggern, follow a charming, red and white marked mountain path in about 2.5 hours to P. 2730, where you meet the main route.
