Einer der längsten Hüttenzustiege in den Berner Alpen
Very long, but interesting and varied approach through all the vegetation zones; from the near-Mediterranean climate of the south ramp near Ausserberg to the glacier forelands of the high mountains.
Route description
Ausserberg - Choruderri
From the Ausserberg train station (931m), follow the road through the village and on to Choruderi.
Choruderri - Hohbitzu
Branch off right from the hairpin bend and follow the Niwärch water pipe on an exposed path into the Baltschiedertal (valley). At Ze Steinu you reach the Baltschiederbach (stream, and valley floor) Continue via Eiiltini, cross to the right (E) side of the valley and on to Chiemattu. From here the path rises more steeply eastward (300 m height gain) before crossing the Baltschiederbach at P. 1943. Continue via Martischipfa and Hohbitzu to P. 2276.
Hohbitzu - Baltschiederklause SAC
Soon after, the path drops slightly to cross the Baltschiederbach (again) via a temporary footbridge. After a flat section, climb steeply over the SW slope, then along an old lateral moraine of the Innre Baltschieder glacier, before finishing left (west) to the hut.
Variant: through the tunnel
Instead of following the Niwärch water pipe, follow the road past eh first hairpin bend, then turn directly into the long tunnel (headlamp required!). A shorter and cooler approach.
