In the canton of Uri there are 39 aerial cableways. They transport hikers and climbers over steep mountain sides, up to where the air is thinner. With little pressure here from mass tourism, the area remains bright and beautiful. Haldi, on a sunny terrace above Schattdorf, is an idyllic starting place for hikes and has a number of attractive summits within striking distance. One of them is Bälmeten. It rises up above the Reuss valley, a characteristic spire with a sensational panoramic view, especially on days of Föhn (a warm south wind which clears the air). Reaching this viewpoint is an arduous task however: almost 1400 vertical metres and a via ferrata with some demanding section lead up the compact limestone. The route offers highlights such as the large Bälmetentor and a wide chimney, through which you'll reach the summit ridge. In early summer the meadows along the way will be in bloom. On the descent you'll come across a tiny, picturesque lake at Schorren. Do not miss taking a break in the restaurant at Stafelalp where you can enjoy the view to Urnersee and the mighty summit of Bälmeten, which you just climbed.

- History
-
The idea of a via ferrata on Bälmeten was conceived by Fabienne Scheiber, a student at the Sportmittelschule Engelberg, who wrote a thesis about it. Her father Oskar was so enthusiastic about the idea that he set out to realise it with the help of a number of friends. Now, that is a vocation related education.
