Route description
Lauteraarhütte – Unteraar glacier
From the Lauteraarhütte (2392 m), in winter one possible descent is to climb northwards a short way before dropping into the steep (up to 41°) couloir which leads down to the Unteraar glacier. Often, however, there is little snow in the couloir, or the conditions are unsafe. In this case it is normally easier to descend the steep series of ladders to the south, or retrace the flatter approach route E over the Trifleni (2325 m).
Unteraargletscher – Aarbiwak
Follow the northern glacier edge to the first glacier junction ca. 2300 m then, at a suitable point, turn south to join Finsteraar glacier. Continue SW up the Finsteraar glacier to the confluence of Finsteraar and Strahlegg glaciers. Ascend the east lateral moraine of the Strahlegg glacier, usually until just past level with the hut, then cut back rightwards (NE) to reach it.
